Chip in to say yes to Māori representation

We are a community that values fairness and inclusion and recognise the unique contribution of Māori to our communities.

That’s why ActionStation is supporting local efforts to fix the legislation that is blocking more Māori representation on local Councils.

Māori wards are areas where people who choose to go on the Māori electoral roll can vote for Māori councillors to represent them. Like people voting in general wards, people on the Māori electoral role still only get one vote.

Currently, Māori are not well-represented in local government and because of that we are missing out on what could be a thriving decision-making partnership. One way to fix this is to establish specific Māori wards.

Councillors in five areas - Kaikōura, Whakatāne, Western Bay of Plenty, Manawatū and Palmerston North - had voted to establish Māori wards to increase Māori representation. Until Don Brash, Hobson’s Pledge and a handful of anonymous wealthy backers used fear and the politics of the past to force a public referendum using an outdated, discriminatory law.

We are all for increasing participatory decision making. But these referenda are unfair for two reasons.

➡️No other ward (e.g. rural) can be subject to a referendum and decided on this way; and ➡️ The rights of a minority group should never be decided by the majority.

Here is what your contribution will enable to happen:

  • mobilising visible public support
  • coordinating local campaigners on a national focus
  • enable a creative petition delivery event

Your contribution will turbocharge the call for more Māori representation on councils by changing the discriminatory law that enabled the Māori wards referenda.
